English Domain To Be Separated from Psychometric Entrance Test as of December 2026

Beginning with the Winter (December) 2026 test administration, the English domain will be separated from the Psychometric Entrance Test (PET). At that point, the test will comprise just two domains: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. The only test that will be used to assess applicants’ English level will be the AMIRNET test. This change is being made in accordance with the decision of the Council of Higher Education (CHE) to expand the range of linguistic competencies being assessed by the English test, and it is the first stage in the process of computerizing the entire PET.

Beginning with the Winter (December) 2026 test administration, the PET will be shortened by one hour. The test will comprise a writing task followed by five sections made up of multiple-choice questions, rather than the current complement of eight multiple-choice sections. The test will include two Verbal Reasoning sections, two Quantitative Reasoning sections, and one experimental section (not necessarily in that order). Examinees will take the AMIRNET test separately, either before or after the PET; it can be taken throughout the year, without being limited to specific test administration dates.

This change will come into effect as of the Winter (December) 2026 test administration. Examinees who take the test before then will take it in its current format. That is, in the Spring 2026, Summer 2026, and Fall 2026 test administrations, the PET will still comprise three domains.

Admissions to Higher Education

This change to the PET’s format will have an impact on future admissions and placement processes, beginning with the 2027-28 academic year, which will open in October 2027. Each academic institution will be able to decide whether to include the English score in its calculation of the general admission score or whether to use the two-domain PET score (equally weighted between the Verbal Reasoning score and the Quantitative Reasoning score) for admissions purposes and the English score just for purposes of determining English placement levels. Before registration opens for the 2027-28 academic year, the universities will publish detailed information about admissions to their academic programs.

Scores on Past Tests To Remain Valid

Examinees who took the PET in the past or who take it in 2026 in its current format, which includes the English domain, and who register to study in the 2027-28 academic year, may apply to institutions of higher education based on their two-domain (Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning) score on PET in its current format.
Even after the change goes into effect, the English domain score and the two-domain PET score will remain valid for at least seven years (depending on the institution) from the day the test was given. This is true of scores on the AMIRAM/AMIRNET English proficiency tests as well.

The two-domain test will use the same scoring scale - 200 to 800 - that is used for the PET in its current format.

Future Changes to the AMIRNET Test

Expanding the range of competencies to be checked by the English proficiency test, as per the decision of the CHE, will not affect the difficulty of the AMIRNET test. Changes to the PET, as well as future changes to the AMIRNET, will be implemented while maintaining the continuity and transparency of admissions processes, ensuring equivalence of scores, and upholding the test’s fairness. A separate announcement concerning the nature of changes to the English test and the date they will come into effect will be released in sufficient time for all examinees to prepare accordingly.
