Background to the AMIRNET Test

During the December 17, 2019 meeting of the Israel Council for Higher Education, it was decided that the higher education system in Israel would shift towards teaching the English language and evaluating students’ achievements in English using a method that focuses on four skills: reading, listening comprehension, writing, and speaking. Following this decision, NITE began to change the English proficiency tests it develops, according to the following format:

  • Stage 1 - AMIRNET: The test will be administered using a modern and accessible technological platform. The test will consist of the same question types that appear on the English sections of the Psychometric Entrance Test and on the AMIRAM.
  • Stage 2 - AMIRNET Plus: The test will consist of AMIRNET with the addition of two experimental sections that contain new question types. Sample questions from these types will be uploaded to the NITE website sometime in 2024 and AMIRNET Plus will be launched about six months later.
  • Stage 3 - Hilal, the English Placement Test for Higher Education: This test will assess three English language skills - reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and the use of language and writing.
